Everything About Book Publishing BasicsEverything About Book Publishing Basics

A book is a written medium for recording private information in the form of illustrations or prose, usually written with many single pages enclosed in a single cover and bound together. The traditional technical term for this binding medium is codex. This binding material is widely used in bindery and publishing for book production. It can be produced from different materials depending on the usage and intended purpose.

The major parts of any book are divided into chapters, a Table of Contents, a Preface, a Forward and a Review. These parts are commonly known as the prologue, the epigraph, the title page, the table of contents and the foreword. Besides these, a book may also include additional pages called forerunners, Advisers, Certificates, notes, acknowledgments, list of resources, index, note lists, bibliography, and references. Every section has specific meaning to the reader. The introduction sets the context or background to the story or the subject matter and the epigraph is the introductory text found at the end of each chapter or book of a book written in this form of publishing.

The main purpose of a book title page is for it to draw attention to a book and the author’s name, address and other details about the author. Title pages need special attention as well, as they are considered by most readers as critical elements of a book. The book’s dedication is another important page, whose primary function is to declare that the work is dedicated to the reader and that the publisher accepts full responsibility for the readers’ benefit. The dedication serves as a way to honor the readers and to offer assurances about the publication’s quality. The foreword is usually written by another author and can include acknowledgments, preface or a more detailed description of the work.

A preface comprises the section of the text preceding the title page. It typically states what the author’s aim or theme is and offers additional information about the background and intended design, including whether the work is bound to a single volume. The epilogue is often a short note on a less significant theme, although some authors choose to include one for all books. The remainder of the text is called the Table of Contents and may include a short note that highlights the differences between the numbered pages or lists the pages that have been numbered.

The final part of a book is the cover or flap, which includes the front matter, which is a two-page figure that appears on the inside back flap of the hardcover. The material that comprises the main body of the book (the text) is called the pages (or chapters) and these are numbered sequentially within each book. Other sections of the book cover are called chapters or parts. The term cover (a Latin phrase) refers to a single title page, usually accompanied by a table of contents. The term prologue indicates that the first section of a book is titled prologue.

A foreword, preface, or introduction is also referred to as a prologue. It’s a short write up that appears in the middle of a book to give readers a brief description of what’s happening and offer an opinion or recommendation. It may be written by an author, an editor, a designer or a publisher. An epilogue is sometimes included after the close of the book but before the start of a new book series. These write ups serve as a “post-script” to the main story, especially for a movie or television show.
